When we did the LSD in the DCSR we were able to loosen the backing plates on the drums and pull the axles out far enough to pull the third member. It saved us from having to deal with the brakes.
Wouldn't that ruin the seals from having it hang like that?

nope i did that a few time swhen i regeared my diff then took it back out to reinstall my stock 3rd.
Exactly.....that's what the guy did when he replaced mine. Just make sure you pull it out straight and I don't think you'll have any issues. If you're worried get a second set of helping hands. Actually from what I remember........he pulled out one side a bit, had me hold it and pulled out the other side then got the third out somehow and pushed back in the axles while he worked on the third. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure he did something like that, because I remember asking him about the brake line, yada, yada, yada and he said this would make things quicker as long as you're careful.
if you undo the 4 backing bolts and the axel can just slide out without having to remove the backing plate, whats keeping the axel from sliding out when tightened up?
thats what I'm confused about because I really don't want to dick with the brake lines..

I installed my TRD LSD without any help, not that hard. You can also pull the axles out far enough to remove the 3rd..... pull em out straight and sit them on a few blocks of wood. This will prevent any binding and contact with seals and bearings.
